Document Summary

Recognize patterns that are common on the pathogens. Dendritic cells play key role in pathogen detection. Detection leads to dc activation (activation of sensor cells) Macrophage recognizes the bacteria, releases cytokines & chemokines. Vasodilation (blood vessels dilate), increasing vascular permeability, causing inflammation and allowing immune cells to go to the site of infection. Immune cells release inflammatory mediators that cause pain at the site of infection. Apcs = antigen-presenting cells (dcs, macrophages, b cells), they activate. 3 crucial signals needed to activate t cells. Point 1 leads to activation, point 2 leads to survival, point 3 leads to differentiation of the t cell. Interaction of the apc and the t cell. Epitope is bound to mhc and presented to the t-cell via the tcr (t- cell receptor). Antigen-specific cells are activated in the lymphoid tissues. B cell receptor = bcr = antibody =~ immunoglobulin. Antibodies (abs) can bind to a small component of the antigen, but not the entire thing.
