Document Summary

Increasing survival following childhood or adolescent ca w/ass"c loss of fertility. Infertility linked to conditions such as diabetes, obesity: premature ovarian failure. It is postulated that this eliminates suboptimal oocytes but the selection process is not understood: post-natal oogenesis: granulosa cells proliferate around growing oocyte (primordial and primary follicle). As this continues to enlarge, establishment of bm around granulosa cells with appearance of thecal cells (secondary follicle). Appearance of antral cavity between the layers of the granulosa cells, dividing them into two populations (cumulous + corona radiata, and mural granulosa cells). These populations have different properties and different roles in development of the oocyte. Furthermore, the embryo produces a hormone that sustains the cl (hcg) to continue producing progesterone so that the egg can implant. Transition from primordial to growing follicle: cohorts of oocytes enter growth pool throughout reproductive life. Tzp: oocyte provides essential factors to granulosa cells e. g. gdf9 (growth differentiation factor 9).
