Those who took a different view about combatting the jim crow system. In the south, white society had a safety net: had a system of laws that kept them free from worry of having african. Provides for broader interaction in society due to jim crow laws. Discrimination was built into the table, informally but strong: eg. discrimination in housing, segregated housing. African americans were kept out of the unions that were forming. African americans as strike breakers creating racial tension. Employers would not employ african americans in anything but low paying manual jobs: many worked as janitors, maids, etc. Difference in racism in the north and south shapes this. Different from most african americans who lived in the south, living through reconstruction.
