Social darwinism: idea of heredity applied in society, only the fittest rise to the top. Became popular in society and led to the science of eugenics. Nathaniel schaller: white race was inherently superior and the whites were needed to progress, blacks would lead to retrogression. Ideas about white supremacy did not only come from scientists and scholars, but became widely dispersed across society. Promote the idea that the civil war was a tragic mistake. Idea that giving blacks citizenship would threaten the us: leading to racial violence that was necessary to straighten out the country. Wilson wrote in a dunning school tradition: the violence of the reconstruction south was unfortunate but understandable given the outrage of what reconstruction was trying to do. Written as state, constitution, local, and school law, created in different ordinances: a complex network of law with an expressed purpose to separate white from black and giving white total authority and control over blacks.
