French revolution stirred the pot in spain, but monarchy is very good at suppressing them. Peninsula war (1808) cf n wanted to have portugal to join continental system but had to get through spain kicks bourbons out and places his brother on the throne. L-> leads to collapse of spanish rule in latin america. 1815: brazil status raised to kingdom constitutionally equal to portugal. Portuguese monarchy does not abdicate, just moves to brazil (see different reactions) 1812: french troops are expelled by british from spain + portugal but portugal monarchy doesn"t come back until 1822. Portuguese king is also king of brazil gives brazil a feel for independence.
