No one really knew what world looked like in 1750 (present-day cartography- distorts shapes) Unlike us, most at the time wouldn"t recognize a map. How did europe impose their norms/values on the rest of the world. At the time, people believed earth was the center of the universe + world as a disc (cf. Christian conceptual map with holy land at center) Ptolemeian map -- > ptolemy first to suggest world may be curved, meaning spherical. Christopher columbus map = first to assume world was round, 1490 (columbus thought he had found india, not new continent) (cc as entrepreneur, not discoverer)
