Document Summary
Insect infestation is one of the major causes of postharvest losses of produce in tropical countries. Bulk of the damage to f&v by insects and pests comes when the produce is on the field. In post harvest area, the actual incidence of spoilage of f&v by insects is not large. However, fruits and vegetables carry these insects, mostly as eggs or larvae to where ever they travel. Insect eggs stay in dormant state for long time. Eggs transform themselves to insects any time when favorable conditions exist. F&v act as carriers of these insects which infiltrate various geographical areas along their route causing damage to farms & orchards. Generally, are dominant in certain geographical areas & breed on certain typical horticultural crops certain species insect fruits. Mexican fruit fly breed on citrus & on other tropical/subtropical are distributed in central america & mexico. Apple maggot which breed on apple crop is especially dominant in usa & canada.
