Pest species interfere with human activity and damage our: bodies, crops, houses, pets, forests, livestock, resources, damage to crop/lifestyle is sufficient to reduce the yield/quality of the product that is unacceptable to the producer. There"s about 1 million species of insects worldwide: only 100 000 insect species in n. a and only 10 000 are considered pests (1000 are serious) 25% of reduced crop yields are due to insect damage. Types of pests: human disease vectors, livestock pests, direct attack reduces production, pathogens (heart worm) c. Intermediate host of parasite (tapeworm fluke: household/structural/stored pests, attack building or stored products (wool, wood, grain, plant pests, damage through direct feeding or disease transmission, agronomic, horticultural, rangeland, forests. *** entomophobia: delusory parasitosis; extreme fear of insect attack. Two-spotted spider mite: misuse of insecticides, carnivores are more sensitive to insecticide than herbivore, human attitudes, appearance of fruits and vegetables resulted in thrips becoming pests, use of insecticides against thrips released spider mites from natural control.
