How can we cope with the present: how can societies coexist? (big question for him) Idea that societies just exist they just are: sui generis so things that generate or give rise to themselves, so not interested in historical trajectories of society, but in where they are now. Not a particular historical view to society: studying institutions and how individual actors step into these structures, organic metaphor of society, society as a system of interconnected parts. It"s what it does in the end that"s important: anomie = when a society becomes an aggregate of disconnected parts that fail to cooperate with one another. Societies based on resemblances and similarities homogeneity. Little interdependence between members because everyone does the same thing they"re like mirror images of each other. Historically associated with small-scale societies (low population density: little tolerance for diversity or deviation (punishment when someone does something differently)
