ANTH 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Sex Selection, Sexual Selection, Gestation
Document Summary
Solitary - males live alone, but may have overlapping territory with females, who also live alone but with their offspring. Most nocturnal animals are solitary, so most strepsirrhines are solitary. Pair-bonded (monogamous); two adults, male and female will come together and share territory with their offspring. Polyandry - one breeding female and multiple males competing with one another for her attention. Polygyny - one male and multiple females; gorillas are classic example of this. Whole host of dominance in this relationship, usually a hierarchy for control of different females within greater social group. Chimps - social structure changes throughout the year. Important to study this because understanding how this works in primates sheds light in how this tendency evolves in us - human social development. When infant has two parents caring for them has a higher survivorship rate, tend to do better in the long run.
