Mating with multiple females when females and resources are distributed in groups. Single males can monopolize breeding access to these females. Pair bonds when females and resources are distributed sparsely. In female philopatric groups, related females tend to have high degrees of affiliation and territorial defense. Polygyny - one male mating with multiple females. Polyandry - single female mating with many males. Social organization and mating systems are not the same thing. We see diversity in these social grouping patterns even within closely related groups of primates, such as the apes. Orangutans social structure strongly tied to erratic food supply. Can store large amounts of fat during times of abundance. Females live with their offspring, males are solitary. Males do not invest much energy in courtship or mating. Males invest heavily in their offspring and in maintaining long term bonds with their mates. Males compete actively to establish residence in groups of females.
