Charles" mother"s family was wealthy, well-established, and politically progressive. Uncle, josiah, particularly supportive of charles throughout his life. He confided in him and was very close. Freethinking physician and he wrote widely on the nature of sciences and medicine. Physician, naturalist, known as public, intellectual in day. He was darwin"s grandpa, but darwin never knew him and he died before. Back in the day, writing was celebrated particularly for its obliqueness. You were expected to deduce the points they were making. He devised his own theory of evolution before darwin did - transmutation (inheritance of derived traits) Attacked by both science & literature community because his work straddled both worlds.
