Happy child grew up affable, talkative and cordial with gift of making lasting friendships & close, happy marriage. Grandfather: erasmus darwin poet, early evolutionary thinker & physician. Other one josiah wedgwood famous potter; both contributing to industrial revolution. Darwin always had place in upper middle-class society & prospect of comfortable inheritance. Grew up in intellectual, freethinking and scientific family atmosphere. 1818-1825: attended shrewsbury school (private boy school) wanting to become doctor. Interest in chemistry - having own lab back home start of darwin"s lasting fascination with science and natural world. 1825: sent him and his brother erasmus to edinburgh medical school began studying medicine.
