Lecture 22: the problem with twos (nov 20th) Dualism is a pervasive cultural category in the west; prevalent in our everyday thinking about things (mind:mody, nature:culture). Scientific method that sees the world as a mechanism. The goal is science is to find how these parts fit together and not who made them. Descartes recognizes this as a problem and much of his work was to figure out the watch and watchmaker qualities in human. We are made by god, but are kind of like god. (mind: watchmaker, matter: watch) He saw it as a problem and resolved it: we have bodies, like machines, but we also have minds and these are god-like. These join together in the pineal gland in the brain. His solution privileges the mind part (i think therefore i am). This legacy is a problem, but it works it distorts things.
