Document Summary

Earth is made up of elements which are made up of atoms. Hydrogen and carbon are the most common, everything is based on carbon in biology. In any given element, the number of protons and electrons are the same so the charge is neutral. Electrons surround the nucleus, only the rst 2 layers of electrons are relevant in biology: the outermost has up to 8 electrons and the inner most has up to 2. The area between the orbitals is called the electron cloud . Nucleus: positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. Elements in the same row (groups) have their electrons in the same shell which makes them similar in size. Elements in the same column (periods) have the same number of the same number of electrons in their outermost shell meaning they have similar chemical properties. Atomic number, shows the number of protons (number below): this is essential because elements are identi ed by their weight/number of protons.
