Advanced technology has allowed us to extend our lives, however the extension of life can increase the burdens of patients suffering a poor quality of life at the end of their lives and may cause more harm than good. Patients may at time be enduring great levels of pain, their loved ones may suffer heavy emotional and financial burdens, not to mention the increasing toll on health care resources. For such reasons, the patient or their family might seek the good death , or what the ancient. Greeks called euthanasia : the difference between physician assisted suicide and physician assisted euthanasia lies in the role of the patient. In physician assisted suicide, the patient must be the one who takes the measures to end their life and requires the physician to assist them by typically giving them a prescription for lethal drugs.
