Sexes refers to the categories that most contemporary societies define as physically based, male and female. Gender the totality of meanings that are attached to the sexes within a particular social system. Gender system a system of meaning and differentiation, linked to the sexes through social arrangements. Sexism prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex. Sociology the study of people in groups; examines the whole range of social phenomena. We are unable to know how common these are because we are either unable or unwilling. Epistemology the theory of knowledge; investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion. In the study of gender, sociologists explore the meanings of maleness and femaleness in social contexts, examining the diversity of gender systems in various cultures and social groups . Social construction refers to the social practice of perceiving and defining aspects of people and situations inconsistently, to force our observations to fit our social beliefs.
