Document Summary

The rapid economic changes described in chapter 6 have had an enormous impact on the gender system. Most people have not given up conceptions of gender-appropriate guidelines for living, but now often treat norms of feminine and masculine behaviour as general suggestions rather than hard-and-fast rules. Contemporary capitalism is a monster that mutates, with changes in technologies and social organization. How it changes is uncertain, but as they continue, classes change, and as do the forms of gender & racial oppression. The impact of opportunity structures and social constraints on people"s behaviours are separate and distinct from the differential socialization of males and females. Social arrangements influence what an individual does, regardless of approval of these arrangements: changes in the norms of socialization & gender need not originate from internalized values. Meanwhile, a new generation is socialized by models of newly accepted behaviour.
