Document Summary

Linking evidence-based nursing practice and patient centered care through patient preferences. Pcc is defined as: the recognition that the patient is the source of control and full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient"s preference, values and needs . Ebp: the integration of best current evidence with clinical expertise and family/patient preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care. There is a tension between pcc and ebp. Patient"s needs and preferences can be easily neglected. Cannot reach a decision about optimal care. Studies show that patients receiving preferred treatment had better outcomes than patients who did not. Emphasise on patient values and preferences had better outcomes. Care that is respectful and responsive to individual patient preference. Much of the focus on ebp is on external evidence. At practical level ebp is equated with clinical protocols and practice guidelines. Patient preferences and values are still fundamental in ebp.
