Hematemesis - vomiting of blood, also "coffee grounds hematemesis" - indicates bleed in stomach with action of acids on blood. Melena - dark stools - indicates "digested" blood in the stool (origin - stomach - action of acids) Hematochezia - bright red blood in the stool - indicates origin is in large bowel.
