SOSA 1050Y Lecture 6: Race and Racism 2
Document Summary
People generally think that there is something ( race") that can identify categories of people biologically. The material signi cance of race" is seen as being in the past or only occurring in different places. Since there are no longer any formal barriers, it tempts us to think that if we are not racists ourselves than there is no problems. If we believe that racism is no longer a problem then we are either naive or not paying attention. Race" and racism is much closer to home. This is when the example of the university setting comes into play. We would be mistaken to think that these institutions are outside of this. We must be critically aware of how we participate in systems. As johnson said, not only individuals but systems connect to systems. Odd that we learn about the contradictions of acts that the institution teaching us is participating in. Anthony stewart, formerly of dalhousie university, professor of english.
