Race - a symbolic category, based on phenotype or ancestry and constructed according to specific social and historical contexts, that is misrecognized as a natural category . Signaling to us that racial groups have been created by humans. Scientists have been trying to find a genetic basis for racial distinctions, but they have been unable to do so. We are going to look at race as a social construct, not a biological fact. Symbolic category - socially constructed category, belongs to the realm of ideas, language, meaning-making, etc. 2010: white, black, african american, or negro, some other race. In the united states, we lump all asians together. When you go to their country, they do not identify as the same group (nationalities) Phenotype - physical appearance, height, hair, texture, eye color, and skin tone. Ancestry - tribal, regional, or national affiliations. We have a fairly extreme way of identifying race in this country.
