Internal respiration is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the bloodstream and tissues/cells: most of the energy generated by our tissues is the result of oxidation of food substrates, so we need oxygen in. The by-product of oxidative metabolism is co2, and carbon dioxide out is equally important, since the accumulation would result in acidification of bodily fluids. If we were an unicellular organism, we could simply use diffusion to move the gases in and out. The development starts from 4th week gestation to early childhood. Lung undergoes five overlapping stages of lung development: pseudoglandular, 5th-17th week: lung resembles a primitive compound gland with the airways as far down as the terminal bronchioles developing.
