Elements to the respiratory control system: sensors which gather information and feed it to , central controller in the brain which coordinates information and sends impulses to the , effectors (respiratory muscles) which affect ventilation. The driving force of respiratory control comes from the brain stem. When we talk about respiratory control, there are 3 different parts that interact with one another. The lungs themselves do not have any muscles attached to them. We set up the inspiratory event via the contraction of the effector muscles. The main one for inspiration is the diaphragm. The central controller is the area of the brain that is providing the output to affect the inspiratory muscles and make them contract more forcefully or more frequently. The brain gets its input from a lot of senses. Particularly, we will talk about the chemoreceptors in the body.
