Document Summary

Phyl 2041 lecture 10 and 11 october 11, 2018 and october 16, 2018. Skeletal muscle: striated, voluntary, many nuclei, major functions: exert force and produce heat. Skeletal muscles are striated, consisting of a dark and a light band. Muscle fiber is the same as muscle cell. About 40% of the human body weight is skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle movement is decided by you, when it happens and where it happens. The muscles produce force and as a by product, this muscle produces heat. Smooth muscle: no striations, involuntary, single nucleus, smooth muscle is located in the walls of hollow organs, functions: ex. peristalsis and control of blood flow. The smooth muscles are spindle-shaped, have no striation, and consist of a single nucleus. Smooth muscles form a dense, complete sheet of muscle cells that are connected to each other. This type of smooth muscle is a signal unit and communicate with other muscles.
