BIOL 1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sporophyte, Gametophyte, Ploidy
Document Summary
Lecture 2 - major groups of land plants and their. Readings: chapter 29. 2 - 30: alternation of generations (continued) Arose independently in evolution several time - so also in other groups. The alternating generations are: gametophyte (haploid, 1n) and sporophyte (diploid, 2n) Spore - single cell that can divide to produce multicellular organism (often with protective coat) Gamete - single cell that can unite with another gamete to produce a diploid zygote. There are 10 divisions (phyla) of land plants (the embryophytes) There are 4 major groups (divisions): mosses, ferns, conifers, angiosperms. There are approximately 15,00 species of the division bryophyta. It is low growing and it is con ned to damp areas because the sperm are swimming and there is no true vascular tissue because they have rudimentary vascular system. They don"t have true leaves because they need to have vascular tissue to have leaves. They are gametophyte dominant and homosporous (1 spore size)
