In addition to processing reflexes, the spinal cord is also the site for integration of neuronal stimulation that locally arises or is triggered by the nerve impulses from the pns (periphery) and the brain: spinal cord protection: Epidural space (filled with fat and blood vessels) Spinal cord and dorsal and ventral roots. The vertebral column surrounds the spinal cord, providing a strong protective defense against damaging blows or bumps: spinal meninges that cover the spinal cord: Dura mater: dense irregular connective tissue tube. Subdural space that is filled with interstitial fluid. Arachnoid = spider web of collagen fibers. Pia mater: thin layer covers the blood vessels, denticulate ligaments (thickenings of the pia mater) hold in place.
