Document Summary

In the 19th century, education was undergoing a process of universalization. Education was previously reserved for the upper class. More and more people were becoming literate, and because of this began to see themselves as having more and more control in their own lives (this is a modern idea) For durkheim, education was not only restricted to science, math, reading and writing education meant socialization into a proper, moral being. His concern was how to best shape and prepare the younger generation into the emerging society. Durkheim made sociology into an official study in university curriculums. Discipline is acquired through routine/regularity and authority: discipline is fundamental to the three spheres of social life. In traditional societies, order is taken for granted. In modern logic, morality must acquire a rational basis. It is something we have to consider. We need to work through morality in a rational way. The issue is centered around who can control education.
