Asks how a society can create cohesion despite having so many people: 1886: close friend commits suicide, resulting in durkheim"s shift in how he examines suicide. He stops considering it as a psychological and biological phenomena and starts looking at trends, patterns and statistics. He thought the individual"s relationship to his particular social groups is responsible for suicide. Distinctions: marx, historical materialist, social life is driven by conflict, conflict creates movement, key thing in society is to consider the base and superstructure dynamic, durkheim, focus is on what binds people together. We produce it daily through our interactions and this becomes established in institutions: there is no base to society. Science of morality: durkheim"s lifelong project was to understand and develop a science of morality, aims to discover which aspects of social life create morality, civilization lacks an influence on morality and moral character. Society becomes a protagonist, an agent in reality. These morals and rules preexist our individual births.
