Elements of violence exit in these scripture for people to use for their own purposes, it is instrumental. violence comes from their approbation of these materials. As history changes, so does the meaning of the scriptures ex) jewish understanding of. God changed from being a war to study as their situation changed. Jihad actually means striving in the path of allah. p. 79 there are 4 different types. 1. jihad of the heart, combatting against evil, trying to become a perfect muslim, like the prophet. 2. jihad by the tongue, striving through discourse, art, debate to understand the truth of the koran or the hadith (sayings of mohammed) 3. jihad of the hands, active exertion, carrying acts of charity, or going to the hajj pilgrimage, saving a person"s life. 4. jihad by the sword, using arms if necessary, fighting in war against enemies of the faith.
