20 views2 pages

Document Summary

Module 3: the periodic table and naming compounds. Elements are arranged into vertical columns called groups (or families) and horizontal rows called periods. Elements in the same group (or family) have similar chemical properties. Elements in a period have different chemical properties. The periods are designated with the numbers 1 to 7. The groups are designated with the numbers 1 to 8 and a letter a or b. The elements in the groups with the letter a are referred to as main-group elements. The elements in the groups with the letter b designation is referred t as the transition elements. The inner transition element (lanthanides and actinides) are located between groups 3b and 4b. Group 2a elements are called alkaline earth metals. Group 8a elements are called noble (or rare, or inert) gases. Organic: compounds that contain at least one carbon atom. Inorganic: compounds that contain atoms other than carbon.
