Document Summary

Proteins are real workforce for living organisms. Examples of chemical reactions: breakdown of starch into glucose, break down of glucose, synthesis of glucose these reactions require many enzymes. Proteins are made by joining many amino acids. Amino acids are monomer units (building blocks of proteins) Basic structure of an amino acid: side chains + amino group + carboxyl group. The side chain is the unique part of each of the 20 amino acids, varying in size, shape and charge. Side chains can be nonpolar, polar or acidic. Human bodies cannot produce all 20 of amino acids. Essential amino acids must be supplied from diet: protein structure. Each protein forms a very specific shape suited for its function. Without proper shape, proteins cannot perform proper function. Amino acids are joined together to form polypeptide. Proteins are created by shaping polypeptide into the functional structure. Amino acids are joined by covalent bonds (peptide bonds)
