Position + social status = infinite loop, jockeying (position - reflects income, education) Robert merton and bates: position = multiple normative expectations, each expectation constitutes a role; conflict position is matrix of interlaced goals, roles (roles are instrumental - goal directed ) Societal expectations of positions: vary by group needs, expectations and rule emphasis. Expectations are normative: define activity range for actor, do this, don"t do that. Positions combine to form a system: jigsaw activity= patterns power.
