Inequality across conventional distinctions between categories of men and women. Conventional distinction between sex & gender (e. g. as in the text): Sex: biological category based on seeing a distinct separation between male or female organs at birth/genetic program of male or female hormones released to stimulate reproductive system (male, female, intersexed, asexual) Gender: social category referring to the feelings, attitudes, desires and behaviours that are associated with a particular sexual category. Views gender diferences as a relection of biological diferences between essential categories of men and women. Diferences between what it means to be male and female are socially constructed in practice and ideology. Critiques of essentialism from critical and feminist perspectives. Ignores historical and cultural variability of gender and sexuality. Generalizing from the average overlooks variations within gender groups. Little to no evidence supports main essentialist claims in sociobiology (e. g. no genes for gendered divisions of household labour )
