It is normal to undergo fluctuations in mood. Indicated by subjective reports, or observations made by others. The criteria for a diagnosis of major depressive disorder is the indecisiveness, nearly every day guilt nearly every day presence of at least one major depressive episode. If the individual has experienced either a manic of hypomanic episode, then the diagnosis is changed to bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder specifiers: single episode vs recurrent episode for an episode to be recurrent, there must be an interval of at least 2 consecutive months between separate episodes in which criteria are not met, mild. Few, if any, symptoms in excess of those required to make the diagnosis are present. Intensity of the symptoms is distressing but manageable. Symptoms result in minor impairment in social/occupational functioning: severe. Number of symptoms is substantially in excess of that required to make diagnosis. Intensity o the symptoms is seriously distressing and unmanageable. Bipolar and related disorders: bipolar i disorder.
