*all content belongs to christopher motz & where cited in lecture slides* Mood disorders: involve mood swings that are prolonged/extreme enough to seriously disrupt life, include syndromes of depression & mania, either separately or in combo, include cognitive, behavioural, & somatic symptoms. 5 or more of following 9 symptoms have been present during same 2-week period & represent change from previous functioning. At least 1 of symptoms either depressed mood (1), or loss of interest or pleasure (2) Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Criteria for diagnosis: presence of at least 1 major depressive episode. If individual has experienced either manic or hypomanic episode, then diagnosis changed to bipolar disorder. Single episode vs. recurrent episode: recurrent episode: must be interval of at least 2 consecutive months b/w separate episodes in which criteria aren"t met.
