Only when personality traits = inflexible & maladaptive & cause significant functional impairment or subjective distress do they constitute pds. 10 pds grouped into 3 clusters based on descriptive similarities: odd/eccentric, dramatic/emotional, anxious/fearful. Clustering system has serious limitations & hasn"t been consistently validated. Individuals frequently present w/ co-occurring pds from diff clusters. Dsm: essential feature = pattern of pervasive distrust & suspiciousness of others such that their motives interpreted as malevolent. Individuals w/ this disorder will assume that other ppl will exploit, harm, or deceive them, even if no evidence exists to support this expectation. They suspect on basis of little or no evidence that others plotting against them & may attack them suddenly, at any time & w/o reason.
