Although it is sometimes used as a sole method of assessment, it is more often used along with several other methods. it serves as the basic context for almost all other psychological assessments. Rooted in the rejection of overt confrontation tactics (e. g. , hot-seat ) Draws from established approaches used by trained clinical psychologists. Fact-finding the primary reason for an assessment interview is to learn about the client and his/her perspective. Appears to be non-directive but in fact is quite strategic and directive in nature. Also intended to set tone for clinical relationship and build rapport between client and therapist/service provider. Challenge for novice therapists learning how to really listen to someone else. Open-ended question strategy get the client talking and describing. Prochaska and diclemente"s transtheoretical model of change: basic stages: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance. Example of motivational model of change: high risk for future substance abuse.
