Document Summary

It is a common way to collect observational data: researchers are coding for certain types of behaviour, and this lets them get very reliable observations. Observation problems: observer bias is when the researcher sees what they want to see. It can be tempting to be biased when coding: observer effects is when participants confirm observer expectations. We will react in the way we think the researcher wants us to: the reactivity is when people know that they are going to be observed. We react to the fact that we are being observed: observations can be powerful, but we have to make sure we are aware of the concerns. Look at how many people answered the poll. Can we generalize from that many people: you do(cid:374)"t (cid:449)a(cid:374)t to (cid:272)hoose a sa(cid:373)ple just (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause you ha(cid:448)e a(cid:272)(cid:272)ess to it. This should be the makeup of your sample: representative sample, the sample represents all the key aspects of the population.
