Born in athens from (424 - 347 bc) It was a school for pholosophical education and training of statesmen. He wrote many dialogues, about 26, in which socrates was the main character. The dialogues are characterized by the use of the socratic method, the so called mid-miing(elenchus). Mid-wiing is asking people question to bring them to think about the answer. It is challenging others to think about the question and the answers themselves. The republic was written around 375 bc, in the early years of the academy. Book iv main topic is the concept of justice in the state. In order to understand the meaning of life you must understand justice. In the previous chapters plato stated that we are in need of the structure of the state (with the division of classes) for our survival and prosperity. Now he"ll try to prove that harmony and balance are the premises for achieving justice.
