Document Summary

Plato, a philosopher who began his life as a student of socrates and ended it as a teacher of aristotle, was born around 427 b. c. e. He died of natural causes at about eighty years old around 347 b. c. e. He came from a wealthy and politically active family, and was apparently originally named aristocles, after his grandfather. Probably the most important date in plato"s life was 387 b. c. e. , when he founded the academy in athens. At the academy, plato posed questions and problems to be solved and studied by others. He also had a great fascination with mathematics, and so included that in his academy. Heraclitus, parmenides, and zeno, although his mentor socrates obviously held the most sway over him, also influenced plato, the great philosopher. It is obvious that socrates reigned supreme in plato"s mind because of the fact that he writes socrates as the main character in most of his dialogues.
