Document Summary
Descriptive research: involves measuring a variable or set of variables as they exist naturally. Not concerned with the relationship between variables. Not able to infer cause and effect: we"re not manipulating something can"t determine what"s causing what. i. e. prevalence of drinking in high school students. Can"t determine why, can only get a number. Observational research design: the researcher observes and systematically records the behaviour of individuals for the purpose of describing behavior. Behavioural observation: direct observation and recording of behaviours: no manipulation. Two measurement problems with this approach: behaviours must not be influenced by the observer. Conceal the observer or habituate the participant to the presence of the observer: interpretation by the observer. Frequency method: counting the instances of each specific behaviour that occurred during a fixed-time observation period: behaviour definition (in specific, observable, measurable terms): Duration method: recording how much time an individual spends engaged in a specific behaviour during a fixed-time observation period.
