The discipline of criminology: six major areas, de nition of crime & criminals, origins & role of law, social distribution of crime, causation of crime, patterns of criminal behaviour, social reactions to crime. The de nition of crime & criminals: not all social harm are criminals, not all criminal acts are harmful. The origins & role of the law: understand what role it plays in our society. The social distribution of crime: to understand crime must know the characteristics of people who commit them, trends in the occurrences of crime over time & di erences among cities, provinces & countries. Patterns of criminal behaviour: criminal acts de ned in terms categories (homicide, theft, sexual assaults)
