CGSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Atony, Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Episodic Memory
Document Summary
Dreaming can occur in rem and non-rem (nrem) states. Nrem dreams tend to be short, dull, and dreamlike. Rem sleep is characterized by rapid eye movement, muscle atonia, and often dreaming. People who have no dream imagery (visual animerai) tend to also have a waking deficit in imaging memories (visual irreminiscence) Correlated with visuospatial skill and individual differences in working memory. Commonly people assert that there was much more to their dream than they can report. Ask people what their dreams tend to be like. Ask people to keep a dream diary. Ask people every morning to report their dreams. Wake people up during sleep at many points during the night and get reports (best way, scientifically) Dreams can be bizarre, but not often in this way. Dreams are rarely bizarre, but when they are we often do not really notice it until we"re awake. Selection bias: bizarre dreams are easier to remember and are more often talked about.
