Document Summary
Characteristic features (1) intense emotions - increased limbic system activity (amygdala in particular) during rem. But these could be the emotions most frequently remembered (2) illogical content - distortions of time, place and person. Can be due shut down of areas responsible for logical reasoning (prefrontal cortex) during rem (3) hallucinations - bizarre sensory and motor sensations. Can be explained by discrepancy between dream events and feedback received by body (4) delusional content - dreamer has uncritical acceptance of the dream experience. Ex: not questioning seeing a flying dog or having conversation with a dead person (5) amnesia - difficult remembering dreams when waking. You can increase chances of remembering dreams when waking up slowly and naturally. Dreams occur in both rem and nrem dreams: differences: More thought oriented and less visual, associated with more positive emotions. More bizarre, more visual imagery, more narrative, action-oriented, and are associated with negative emotions: lucid dreams.
