The inspiration and mobilization of others to undertake collective action in pursuit of the common good. Influence will turn on their own qualities of character, expertise, prestige, intelligence, charm and credibility, but these will have little impact unless they engage the relevant needs and motivation of the persons being influenced. Transformational leaders: inspire followers to transcend their own self0interests and who are capable of having a profound and extraordinary effect on followers. Transactional leaders: guide or motivate their followers in the direction of established goals by clarifying role and task requirements. Prototypical leadership: the leader of the group is the person that displays the most characteristics perceived to be associated with leadership. Suggest you can train people to be leaders. Michigan studies: employee oriented leaders: leaders who emphasize interpersonal relations. Sept 30 - leadership: production oriented leaders: leaders who emphasize the technical or task aspects of the job. Contingency/situational theories: propose leadership effectiveness is dependent on the situation, context matters.
