Social norms guiding informal rules: acceptable form of dress, conversations and interactions with others. Deviance - deviation from social norms, rules or laws. Vary by social location: gender expect certain behaviors out of men & women, age tantrums, social context. Daily life is hinged on social norms & rules. Labeling means to shame/ridicule: we all participate in the process. Rules of society are obvious: human rights. Denial of equals deviance; denying someone"s access. Statistical: frequency of behavior (high = norm & low = deviant) Normaive: variation from a social norm. Media shapes our understanding of crime: influence sense of outrage. Pickton case: political pressure, 2012 inquiry systematic bias within rcmp & vancouver police. Social forces shape: what defined as criminal, investigations, prosecutions, etc. Crime: culpable action or omission prohibited by the state. State tells you its wrong then its wrong.
