Symbolic interactionism- microsystem, we are a result of our socialization. Conflict theory- macrosystem, power relations, capitalism is evil. Originates from harvard law school (dr. derrick bell) No one perspective, theory, methodology or doctrine. Understanding creation and maintenance of white superiority and subordination of people. How race is structured by ideas/legal doctrines such as fairness, equality and equal of colour protection under the law. Race neutral doctrines are not neutral, they work to subordinate other groups. Want to change the relationship between race, racism and law. If not addressed, we cannot enact social change. Canada is structured by racist policies (indian act, reserve system, chinese immigration. Social norms- guiding informal rules (vary by social location: age, gender) Legal: deviance is not all law breaking behaviour (non criminal deviance) Moral: absolutist- rules of society are obvious, human rights- denial of rights. Statistical: frequency of behaviour, not all infrequent acts are deviant, not all frequent acts are normal.
