Goals: teaches impulse control and helps individuals develop a conscience, teaches individuals how to prepare for and perform certain social roles, cultivates shared sources of meaning and value. Individuals learn to live together in an ordered way to produce society": 2. Society then influences how people"s character and behaviour develops: vital for, producing and maintaining society, the well-being of members. Examples of different social values or rules for behaviour (norms) that people are into in different cultures. Agents of socialisation: family, education (teachers teach you how to act around people of authority, peer groups, mass media. Examples: acting out in a public place, time outs, throwing fits, sharing: indirect and accidental. Examples: gender messages, swearing, modelling behaviour from parents or adults. Michelle cunningham"s study: watched mothers raising their children. Examples: blatant: don"t drink and drive, subtle: advertising and media (ie. what is beautiful) Most often indirect and accidental, and conveyed subtly.
