POLI 3P71 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: The Symbolic, Gender Trouble, Identity Politics
Document Summary
Feminism is sometimes associated with political ideologies. Political and theoretical problem regarding how to define feminism. We need a working definition of feminism. Problem politically: some have argued that we need to limit what we count as feminism because otherwise, what we are doing is assuming conservative feminism which we may think may not count as feminism. We think that women"s role is only to be in the household, generating the debate that they won"t be funded because the ideologies of women are backward looking. Feminism is like other isms such as liberalism etc. Most importantly, we define it as a set of ideas that has these characteristics but they also recommend change in society (always making recommendations for change) The working definition is oppression, subject to undue authority. You are subordinate because you have less political power. Another element of the definition is that you make an assessment and say there should be a change.
